Eco News Network presents our favorite eco-celeb of the week. We love seeing what celebrities are up to, and that doesn’t mean when it comes to movies, television or music albums, but with how they’re giving back to the planet. This week, gifted actress Penelope Cruz caught our eye for her talent and eco-efforts. Check out how she protects Mother Earth.
The sultry Spanish actress Penelope Cruz melts hearts everywhere through images, film and on stage. There’s much more to this pretty face than meets the eye, as she holds high respect for the planet.
Penelope showed off some skin in February 2012 for PETA’s “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” campaign. Jump here to check out the stunning image.
The animal rights organization sought her out just for this particular initiative. As PETA’s Lisa Lange said, “Penelope has appeared on every ‘best-dressed’ list in the world, and the one thing you’ll never see her wearing is fur. PETA couldn’t ask for a more fitting emblem of the modern, glamorous woman who knows that there’s nothing more beautiful than a woman who has a look that kills without anyone having to die for it.”
Her campaign was even turned into a 70-foot billboard in New York City’s Penn Station. I bet that stopped traffic!
It’s really no surprise that Penelope posed. For her 2008 film “Manolete,” which told the story of a famous bullfighter played by Adrien Brody, the actress ensured bulls were treated kindly on set.
“Penelope Cruz is as disturbed as you are by cruelty to any animal. Her contract requires that no animal be harmed in any way during the filming of Manolete and certainly that no bull be killed,” her manager said in a letter Penelope had sent to PETA.
It’s great to see that she won’t let her career get in the way of supporting animals. The Oscar-winner also has three dogs, one that’s a rescue, and three cats adopted from the pound.
In addition to animal activism, Penelope has spoken about the importance of protecting the environment on several occasions.
At one Global Green event, she revealed on the red carpet, “You can drive a hybrid car instead. You can do little things like walk more instead of using the car so much; buy a bicycle; anything to try to take care of your environment.
“Little things like that can make a huge difference, but something that for some reason people don’t – and I include myself – we haven’t taken it seriously enough, yet, and it’s already a huge problem and we’re already experiencing the consequences of not taking it seriously enough.”
Even she admits she can do more to better the environment. Hopefully, others will follow in her footsteps to also do more!
